About The Hunt for 10x
Buying stocks isn’t investing
I did what I was supposed to.
I worked hard. I lived frugally. I saved money.
I didn’t leave my money in a bank account to whither away with inflation.
Nope.
I bought stocks.
And, as years passed, I accumulated a good number of them.
One day, I was looking at my beloved stocks.
I was admiring the two that’d grown by 10x.
Boy, did those make me feel good.
But, then, I started looking at all the disappointments that hadn’t grown or had lost value.
And, I started adding them all up.
And, when they were all added up, I found that they’d grown about 6-7% per year. Disastrously below the 10-15% I was supposed to get from investing in stocks.
What happened?
Every time I’d purchased a stock, it was supposed to multiply in a couple years.
Why did a couple do what they were supposed to, while the rest just tanked the overall result?
What was the pattern?
The pattern was that there was no pattern.
I’d been choosing stocks randomly, based on whims, tips, and feelings.
And, in a moment of honesty with myself, I realized:
I don’t know what the f*** I’m doing.
I was buying stocks, like I thought I was supposed to.
But, what I wasn’t doing was investing.
That realization was the kick in the butt I needed to learn how to actually invest.
Time for a change
I’ve decided hope and speculation isn’t a good enough strategy for me anymore.
I've bought stocks for all the reasons:
A Yahoo Finance article said the company was going to grow 🚀
A famous investor mentioned the company in an interview 🤑
A friend recommended it 🔥
I use a product the company makes 💡
Reddit 😩
Except the one that matters:
The company’s value is higher than its market price.
Time to change that.
